Café
Scientifique Forum - ‘Nanotechnology: A Brave New World'
Café Scientifique
is a forum for scientists and the general public to discuss topical
and thorny issues in science and technology over good food &
wine. Monash University (Clayton, Australia) established the sessions
in March 2005 and they are held every couple of months on the campus.
The next speaker is Dr Bob Irving, the Scientific &
Commercial Director of Nanotechnology Victoria. Dr Irving will be looking at the
implications of developing and using nanotechnologies, and will also
discuss the complex ethical and regulatory issues of this subject.
In short, Dr Irving will clarify nanotechnology matters, outline the
opportunities and present perspectives on its challenges.
Registration is not required and there is no entry charge to the
forum.
Date and time: Wednesday 13 July 2005 at 6pm.

Nanotechnology International Business
Competition
The second annual competition
for nanotechnology business ideas has just been launched,
and is looking to attract quality entries from international ‘nano-preneurs'
who are keen to win the top prize of $75,000.
Jointly organised by the Institute for Management and Engineering
(TiME), the Science Entrepreneurship Program (SEP), the Institute
for Technology Innovation (InTICE) and the Nano-Network, the
competition is open to anyone in the world who has a great idea for
starting up a nanotech business. While any area of nantechnology
will be considered, ideas in the areas of energy, healthcare &
medicine, aerospace & automotive applications, and consumer
products, are particularly encouraged.
In addition to the first prize of $75,000, the
winners will receive guidance in developing a full business plan as
well as other business development assistance. There will be an
awards ceremony for the winning teams at the Nano-Week conference in
Cleveland, Ohio, on 21 October 2005.
The closing date for submitting entries is 15 September 2005, and
the entry fee is $100. The deadline for submitting the letter of
intent is 15 July 2005.

Nanotechnology Courses - International
Master in Nanotechnologies (IMN) with Civen and Veneto Nanotech
Civen
and Veneto Nanotech,
leading partners in a high-tech cluster that specialises in nanotechnology,
are offering graduate students the chance to do an International
Master in Nanotechnologies (IMN) at its locations in
Venice in NE Italy. The course aims to provide students with scientific
knowledge, practical expertise, project management skills, and will
focus on the business applications of nanotechnologies. As the students
will do their learning in a creative nano-cluster made up of leading
departments from the Venetian Universities (Padua, Venice and Verona),
innovative companies (SMEs) and start-ups run by nano-preneurs,
the mixed discipline atmosphere should make for a rich learning
experience.
To highlight the importance of knowledge transfer in developing
nanotechnology products, the course is divided into a 7-month
academic session (Jan-July) and a 3-month industrial internship
(July-Sept) with a nanotech company. Taught entirely in English, the

hands-on lab activities, with classes being held in the beautifully
equipped VEGA Park - just two kilometres from downtown Venice.

EuroNanoForum2005 -
Europe's Premier Nanomedicine
Conference of 2005

This flagship EU-sponsored conference is focusing on healthcare
applications of nanotechnology - an acknowledged area of European
strength. It brings together international speakers and delegates to
discuss how nanotechnology and biotechnology, material science,
pharmaceutical science, electronics, and information technology can
address the healthcare issues of the future. The launch of the
European Technology Platform on NanoMedicine will also take place
during this event.

Website Stats for AZoNano
With June now over, it is possible to look at the AZoNano website
stats for the second quarter of 2005. From April to June, an amazing
total of 390,683 visitor sessions took place, with
a grand total of 952,518 pages being viewed during
these sessions. Compared to the first quarter of 2005, when
302,414 visitors viewed 634,486 pages, the second
quarter stats represent a 30% increase in web
traffic on AZoNano - thus reinforcing AZoNano's international
reputation as one of the leading nano websites.
