EuroNanoForum2005 -
Europe's Premier Nanomedicine
Conference of 2005

Taking place in Edinburgh from
6-9 September, EuroNanoForum2005 will showcase
European developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology for medical
applications. The conference brings together many disparate disciplines
with a focus on healthcare, which is a critical element in the social
and economic well-being of Europe. With more than 100 international
speakers spread over five days, EuroNanoForum2005 expects to be
the biggest nanotechnology conference in Europe, attracting an audience
of 1,000 delegates.
Poster Competition
To encourage young researchers - PhD students/first post doctoral
position - we are sponsoring the promising scientists of the future.
40 sponsored places are on offer, which includes free entry to the
conference, free accommodation and free travel.
Workshops on Demand
The workshops are intended to bring delegates together in
informal or formal groups to discuss topics relevant to the
conference. If you wish to propose a topic or find out more
about the workshops, please contact carrie@nano.org.uk .
For more information about the conference visit www.euronanoforum2005.org and

Featured Nanotechnology Tools - the
NanoLog™
The NanoLog™ series of spectrofluorometers
are specifically designed for research in nanotechnology and the
frontiers of nanomaterials. Based on the worldwide-proven technology
of the Fluorolog®, the NanoLog™ detects fluorescence in
the near-IR from 800 to 1700 nm (optional multi-channel detection
to 2 µm, single-channel detection to 3 µm), with visible and UV
options possible.
With the NanoLog™ comes specially-designed
software which is ideal for classifying single-walled carbon
nanotubes (SWNTs), performing energy transfer calculations, and
saving custom routines and instrument layouts. A complete spectrum
can be scanned in just a few milliseconds, and a full
excitation-emission matrix scan can be performed in several
seconds.
The NanoLog analysis tools offer the
following benefits:
- Rapid excitation-emission matrices in seconds,
|
- Compatible with variety of detectors from UV to near-IR,
|
- High sensitivity in near-IR with InGaAs array,
|
- Resolve mixtures of quantum dots simultaneously,
|
|
- Perform energy-transfer experiments,
|
- Eases qualification and quantification of species and
families of SWNTs,
|
- Modular design for your ideal experimental set-up.

Book of the Month - 'Nanophysics
and Nanotechnology: An Introduction to Modern Concepts in
Nanoscience'
One in a series of books on nanotechnology
published by Sigma-Aldrich, this book offers an introduction
to the physical concepts, techniques and applications of nanotechnology
and nanoscience. As such, the book is ideal for anyone working in
(or studying) engineering, science and materials science - not to
mention the researchers from varied backgrounds who work in the
new interdisciplinary areas that make up nanotechnology.
The book is structured into the following subject areas:
- Introduction
- Systematics of Making Things Smaller, Pre-quantum
- What are Limits to Smallness?
- Quantum Nature of the Nanoworld
- Quantum Consequences for the Macroworld
- Self-assembled Nanostructures in Nature and Industry
- Physics-based Experimental Approaches to Nanofabrication
and Nanotechnology
- Looking into the Future
|
Within these chapter headings, the author covers the
nanotechnology spectrum from the latest examples of nanoscale
systems, quantum concepts and effects, self-assembled nanosystems,
manufacturing, scanning probe methods of observation and
fabrication, to single-electron and molecular electronics. On top of
all this, the book concludes by considering what the long-term
outcomes of nanotechnology might be.

Competition - The International NanoChallenge

NanoChallenge is an international
business plan competition organised by the nanotechnology cluster,
Veneto Nanotech. The competition
aims to offer people the chance to start their own nanotechnology
company.
But it's not just about testing people's ability to draw up a
business plan, since the €300,000 grand prize gives
the winning team the money, resources and opportunity to launch
their own nanotechnology business. On top of having your first year
expenses paid for, your company will benefit from being located in
the leading-edge nanotechnology atmosphere of Veneto Nanotech, in NE Italy.
The winning team receives:
- €200,000 (cash) investment from Veneto Nanotech,
- 1 year free incubator services,
- 1 year free access to the Nano Fabrication Facility
laboratory,
- 1 year free accommodation for two people,
- 1 year in-kind consulting services (IP policy, law, etc).
The competition is open to anyone who
has a nanotechnology business idea, and you must register your entry
for the competition by 31 June 2005.
To register for and find out more about this competition visit NanoChallenge.
