Download Times

[These files are] around [x.x MB] in size and should take approximately [n] to [n*1.5] minutes to download on a standard 56KB modem.

Notes

[These files are] can be replaced with appropriate text i.e. "This file is", "These plug-ins are", etc.

If the context of the sentence makes the above sound incorrect, try using one of the synonyms below in replace of "around". Note, "approximately" should not change.

Synonyms

roughly
about
in the region of
almost

We should always have "approximately" before the download time e.g. approximately 2 – 4 minutes. This is because we cannot guarantee that any file will download in the stated time.

Download times should be n to n*1.5 where n are minutes.

Always round up to the nearest minute. E.g. 8 – 12 minutes., 25 – 38 minutes.

We should always give the time in minutes even if the time is an hour or more. E.g. 75 – 113 minutes rather than 1 hour 15 mins – 1 hour 53 minutes.

We should be able to calculate download time using a standard 56kb modem based on the modem downloading between 3 – 3.5KB per second. This equals 180 – 210KB per minute. One megabyte should therefore take 5.6 minutes at least. So, we would say 6 – 9 minutes for one megabyte on a standard 56KB modem. This could take as low as 4 minutes in reality.
